Fleming arrived in Nottingham in time to take charge of the team against Middlesex at Lord's, and Newell expects to see plenty of innovations from the New Zealand captain.
He said: "We needed to bring a world-class batsman into our top five in the order to replace Kevin Pietersen and Fleming will certainly do that.
"But he's also an intelligent cricketer who is always full of ideas on the pitch and I will certainly be letting him run things as he sees fit.
"He's expressed to me in the past month how keen he is to play for Notts and I think he sees this as a big challenge in his career."
