Despite missing four front line seamers, we performed well in the field, with fine spells from AJ Harris, Gareth Clough and Graeme Swann restricting the home side to just 190 from their 45 overs.

But our batting - so strong and reliable in the four-day game this summer - failed to fire.

None of our top five managed to get beyond 20 and we fell 16 runs short in another game we arguably should have won.

?We can't bat at the moment and we simply have to get better,? said a furious Newell.

?We have good players, who are proving their quality in the Championship, but when it comes to the one-day game we look like we haven?t got a clue what to do.

?We can work on the problem all we want in training but we have to be able to do the right things under the pressure of a match situation.

?The grim reality is that after four games and four defeats we are in a relegation fight and our target for the season has to be survival in Division One.?

Newell now takes his team to take on Sussex on Wednesday in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy and he is desperate for things to come right on the south coast.

?It?s a knock-out match - all or nothing,? he added.

?Large aspects of our bowling and fielding have been good this season and it?s imperative we match that with the bat to progress in this competition.?
