David Hussey claims he's "thrilled and very excited" to have been picked as captain while Stephen Fleming is on duty with New Zealand in the World Cup.
Hussey will skipper the side in four Liverpool Victoria County Championship matches and five games in the Friends Provident Trophy, with Fleming returning to Trent Bridge for May 23.
Hussey said: "To be asked to captain a massive club like Notts is a huge honour and I fell thrilled and very excited.
"Captaincy is a tough job and mentally draining as you are always thinking a few steps ahead, but I'm very much looking forward to taking on the challenge.
"On the field my role is to be a leader and motivate the team to a few early wins. I don't think anybody in world cricket can do a better job than Stephen Fleming, but hopefully we can get the results to help us back to where we should be - in Division One.
"That's the number one aim for the season but I also think we are capable of winning a one-day trophy. We were very close last year, not only with Twenty20 but also Pro-40, and it would be nice this summer to go one better."
