A career-best bowling performance from Samit Patel gave Nottinghamshire a narrow advantage at the halfway stage of their Championship match with Hampshire.

Patel claimed 5-74 from a marathon spell of 27 overs to leave the hosts on 287-9 at the close, still 39 behind the Notts first innings total of 326.

Resuming on 305-8, Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck were removed by pace bowler David Griffiths with Mark Ealham finishing unbeaten on 70 not out.

Hampshire looked in a strong position after lunch at 166-1 but Patel then began to exert an influence with his left-arm spin, having Michael Lumb stumped by Chris Read for 43.

Ealham had James Vince caught off the first ball after tea and Patel took the key wicket of James Adams for 112 with a bat-pad catch by Bilal Shafayat.

Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals as the 24-year-old found consistent turn, although Dominic Cork still remains at the crease with 21 not out.
