Director of Cricket Mick Newell will try another opening partnership at Headingley as Notts search for a winning formula at the top of the order to rescue their Twenty20 Cup campaign.

Notts take on Yorkshire Carnegie on Thursday knowing anything but a win will almost certainly extinguish their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals, before the tournament takes a break for the ICC World Twenty20.

And Newell is seriously considering his fourth opening partnership in six matches after seeing Will Jefferson fall cheaply after moving up the order against Leicestershire.

Newell said: “We decided before the match we needed to try something different and we will look to change it again tomorrow.

“We’ve got to find a combination that will get us off to a good start and will try and re-jig the order against Yorkshire.

“Yorkshire are battling away and have some experienced players in their ranks with bat and ball, like Michael Vaughan, Jacques Rudolph, Anthony McGrath, Deon Kruis and Naved-ul-Hasan.

“They held their nerve to beat Durham in a low-scoring match the other day. They tend to draw large crowds for their home games and I expect that will be the case tomorrow.

“It’s going to be a tough ask for us but we simply must pull off the win to stay in the hunt for the quarter-finals.”
