Opener Tony Frost edged Mark Ealham to the wicketkeeper to bring England discard Ian Bell to the wicket, who added 56 with Bears captain Ian Westwood before the left-hander was caught by Will Jefferson off Luke Fletcher for 73.
The score moved on to 220 before a middle order collapse, with Bell, Jonathan Trott, Tim Ambrose and Keith Barker all falling to leave the scoreboard at 242-6 as Fletcher combined with Samit Patel in a profitable spell.
Neil Carter thumped 47 off 26 balls before Darren Pattinson picked up his first wicket of the day, with Charlie Shreck taking the catch.
Fletcher finished the day with 3-103, while Jim Troughton was unbeaten on 63 and Chris Woakes 32 not out.
