Andre Adams and Ryan Sidebottom were rewarded for their patience with three wicket hauls as Notts were made to toil by the Lancashire top order.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul fell lbw to Sidebottom eight runs short of his century as Lancs slipped from 280-2 to 300-6.
His 151-run partnership with Mark Chilton has given the visitors the early initiative but he had no answer for Sidebottom’s incisiveness with the new ball.
Dropped slip catches in the morning session angered Adams who took two late wickets to setup a hat-trick chance when play resumes on day two.
Openers Horton and Smith both struck eight fours in half-centuries to give Lancashire a solid foundation. Chilton will resume alongside Luke Sutton as Adams attempts tp secure a second LV= County Championship hat-trick having achieved the feat for Essex against Somerset in 2005.
