A superb display of bowling and fielding by Notts Outlaws produced an emphatic 7 wicket victory in their last group game of the Friends Provident t20 against Yorkshire Carnegie.
The win moves the Outlaws back into top spot in the North Section of the competition and they will watch Sunday’s the game between Warwickshire Bears and Leicestershire Foxes with interest as they aim to finish in pole position.
Ryan Sidebottom, and Luke Fletcher making his first appearance in t20 this season, who got the Outlaws off to a perfect start with the ball.
Sidebottom had Adam Lyth caught at point by Steven Mullaney in the first over and Fletcher followed that in the fourth over as Carnegie captain, Andrew Gale, skied a miss timed drive to Graeme White at cover.
Tight bowling and some superb fielding restricted Carnegie to 25 from their 6 power play overs and the introduction of spin only increased the pressure as Read stumped Gary Ballance off the left arm spin of White.
South African star, Herschelle Gibbs, followed quickly after leaving Carnegie in disarray at 45-4 at the half way stage.
It was left to Jonathon Bairstow and debutant Lee Hodgson to add some respectability to the scoreline.
Bairstow launched a six over the Larwood and Voce stand during his 25 from 25 deliveries before another attempt at the same shot resulted in a diving catch for Pattinson at deep mid wicket from the bowling of Mullaney.
Hodgson batted superbly for his unbeaten 39 and dragged the score past the 100 mark in the 19th over.
Carnegie began in similar fashion to their Nottinghamshire counterparts restricting the Outlaws to 20 for 2 from the first five overs.
Samit Patel, however, eased pressure in the final over of the power play with three consecutive boundaries. The first two were neatly clipped over the head of Adil Rashid at midwicket and he followed up with a sweet drive through the covers.
Hodgson then missed a difficult caught and bowled chance from Patel on the last ball of the over and the Outlaws all rounder went on to make a valuable 40 from just 22 balls including six fours and one six.
Patel was finally caught at long on going for another maximum off the left arm spin of David Wainwright.
His dismissal brought ever reliable skipper, David Hussey, to the crease. In an ssured display of batting alongside Alex Hales the Outlaws knocked off the required runs with 4.2 overs left to spare.
Man of the match, Samit Patel, can’t wait for the Quarter Final at Trent Bridge, he said; “That was a confident win and gives us great confidence ahead of the Quarter Final here at Trent Bridge.
“The crowd was brilliant again tonight and the boys love playing at home in front of our own fans. I hope we get a big crowd for the Quarter Final – we just can’t wait for it now.”
