England captain Andrew Strauss says that Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales must show consistent form in domestic cricket if he is to stake a claim for international consideration.

Hales and Durham teenager Ben Stokes have been earmarked as ones to watch after making impressive contributions on the county scene.

“When players are injured or rested, it is important that we’re able to call on others who can fit into the team and do well,” said Strauss, who could call on Jonathan Trott in the absence of Kevin Pietersen.

“Hales and Stokes are doing well in the county game but they need to earn the right to play international cricket by performing consistently over an extended period of time.”

Strauss will lead England against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in Thursday’s One Day International. England have never lost to the Tigers in any form of cricket but Strauss insists they must take victory for granted.

“Every series begins on level terms and it’s up to us to impose ourselves and get on top,” he said.

“Our objective is to win the series three-nil but there’s no looking back on what we’ve achieved against Bangladesh in the past.”

Tickets are available for the fixture and supporters are welcome to pay on the day.
