Second Eleven Championship
Cleethorpes, Day 1 of 3
Notts 111-8
Lancashire 224
Notts require a further 217 runs to win

The bowlers were in the ascendency on the first day of this match at Cleethorpes.

Lancashire batted first on winning the toss and it was soon apparent that there was uneven bounce from the surface as well as the ball having a tendency to swing.

The visitors lost Miles and Carter early on as they fell to 18-2. Notts however were guilty of some wayward bowling that kept keeper Scott Stanworth active behind the stumps.

Shanker (29), Cross (26) and Parry (39) made useful contributions but the 41 made by Tipper took Lancashire beyond the 200 mark. The final total of 224 included 33 in extras of which 19 were wides and no balls.

Although individual bowling figures from Ball (3-36), Miles (3-58) and Carter (3-63) seemed reasonable they were not a reflection of what could have been. A special mention however for Scott Stanworth who bagged five catches, most of them diving to his left or right.

The Lancashire bowlers in comparison bowled better to suit the pitch conditions and apart from Matthew Wood (33) and Sam Wood (23) the batsmen struggled. All four Lancashire bowlers claimed wickets as Notts ended on 111-8.

The portents for the day were not good when Mark Nelson fell chasing a ball in practice and tumbled fracturing his ankle. Luke Fletcher answering the call to Trent Bridge as a replacement.

Then in attempting a hard hit return catch, Graeme White suffered bruising to his right hand but precautionary x -rays showed only bruising.
