Nottinghamshire (329 and 246-5) beat Hampshire (300 and 273) by 5 wickets

Mark Wagh struck a confident century to help Nottinghamshire record a third consecutive win in the LV= County Championship.

A telling 118-run partnership between Wagh and Hashim Amla gave Notts the initiative and after Amla, Patel and Brown fell in quick succession, Chris Read hit the winning four.

Hampshire had resumed on 177-4 with Pattinson and Franks removed Pothas and Vince lbw before Samit Patel and Charlie Shreck mopped up the Hampshire tail. Nottinghamshire then set about chasing 246 for victory.

Neil Edwards fell for eight bringing in Wagh who began aggressively whilst Bilal Shafayat blocked at the other end until he was caught by Benham off Herath having scored 12 from 66 balls.

“Mark played very well and I was pleased that he saw it through because I like the batsmen to take on responsibility when we’re chasing a victory target,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“He had a good partner in Hashim and once they got together the finish line was in sight.

“There were periods this morning where our bowling didn’t look especially threatening but then we removed Cork, Ali and Herath in the space of six balls and realised that the win was there for the taking.

“Winning a game in the last half hour on the final day is a great advert for the competition and going into the Durham match with three consecutive wins behind us feels fantastic. The weather has been good and there have been a lot of positive results in the early reckoning which I think will lead to a very open championship race.

“We’re all looking forward to the Durham match on Monday.”
