On a perfect strip for batting, Durham who took advantage on winning the toss to compile a huge score before declaring to leave leaving Notts with 13 overs to face before the close.
It was two players with more famous relatives who joined together in a third wicket stand of 185 to enhance the earlier good work of Coetzer 51 and Raine 52 .
Coming together at 126-2 in the 25th over Ben Harmison, brother of Steve, and Keaton Jennings, son of former South Africa coach Ray, made the Notts attack toil for 50 overs before Harmison was brilliantly stumped by Adeel Shafique off the bowling of Neil Edwards for 84.
Edwards then claimed a second wicket having Clark leg before taking himself out of the attack with 2-17 from four overs.
Jennings went on to score 132 before being well caught on the boundary by substitute fielder Scott McNeil off the bowling of Cumming for 132 from 222 balls.
McNeil had replaced Sam Wood who strained a hip muscle in the field.
The early onslaught by the Durham openers was contained by the spin attack of Graeme White and Scott Elstone who bowled well to record an economy rate of just three from a shared 36 over spell.
Neil Edwards was caught at mid wicket for 17 two overs before the close.
