Notts Outlaws couldn’t capitalise on Marcus Trescothick’s third ball duck as Somerset Sabres successfully defended 270 to win by 47 runs at Trent Bridge.
Trescothick fell leg before to Luke Fletcher to give the home side the best possible start but a fluent century from Craig Kieswetter but Somerset back on track.
Vying for a return to England’s one day side, Kieswetter shared century partnerships with Peter Trego (47) and Jos Buttler (94) before he was caught by Steven Mullaney having hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his round hundred.
"You think your luck is in when Marcus goes for nought in the first over."
"Jos Buttler's innings took the game away from us and we struggled to find a suitable way to bowl at him within our game plan," said Mullaney.
"We made a great start and you think your luck is in when Marcus goes for nought in the first over but Craig Kieswetter was superb and we have to hold our hands up and say we've been beaten by a better side today."
Notts made inroads after Samit Patel bowled Trego. The departures of Compton (7) and Hildreth (14) reduced Somerset to 149-4 but Buttler’s 94 not out from 56 balls proved decisive in the final reckoning.
Ben Phillips made his Notts debut but proved expensive against his former club in conceding 66 runs from seven overs.
Chris Read and Scott Elstone were the only Notts batsmen not to reach double figures but the lack of an individual fifty in the top five meant the run chase was built on weak foundations.
Notts had slipped to 78-4 in the 14th over and although Adam Voges (35) and Steven Mullaney (38) prospered in partnership, their dismissals, and that of first ball victim Elstone, came in rapid succession to leave Notts well short at 157-7.
Tenth wicket pair Luke Fletcher (16) and Jake Ball (16*) attacked aggressively with nothing to lose but Trego’s catch at deep mid-wicket gave Sri Lankan spinner Ajentha Mendis 4-35 and handed Somerset their first win of the season.
