Second XI Friendly
Day One of Two
Notts Second XI 319-3 dec Cambridge University 203-1

It was runs galore on Day 1 of this two day friendly match at the Notts Sports Club. Over 500 were scored from 96 overs as the batsmen ruled on a good batting pitch on a cold day which saw catches evade frozen fingers.

Both Rikki Wessels and Akhil Patel were grateful as they were dropped in consecutive balls by the same fielder.

Neil Edwards was the only wicket to fall being caught behind for 11.

Wessels maintained his form shown against Surrey with a second hundred from 85 balls with 4 sixes and 13 fours in his 101, an innings of good drives and savage pulls on any short pitched bowling. He retired out having added 188 with Patel for the second wicket.

Patel also retired having scored 112 containing seventy runs in boundaries.

Scott Elstone (43) and Sam Kelsall (27) then added 76 in 12 overs before the declaration came.

If Notts hoped that the students would struggle they were soon to be aware that this would not be the case as Ackland and Hughes set about the attack made up, apart from Jake Ball, of Academy bowlers.

They added 187 for the first wicket, Hughes falling to Ball for 98, and Ackland reached his century from the penultimate ball of the day which was just as well as he has an examination to sit today and would not have been able to continue his innings.
