Stellar knocks from Alex Hales (61), Riki Wessels (37) and Samit Patel (45) helped Notts Outlaws to set an unassailable target in their Clydesdale Bank 40 encounter with Gloucestershire Gladiators at Cheltenham.

Scott Elstone reinforced the batting card with 36 on his return to the side in place of Adam Voges and despite losing ten wickets, the visitors’ 266 always looked too much for the hosts.

The Outlaws run rate slowed as the innings progressed with 96 on the board after 10 overs and 174 after 20. Ali Brown was first to fall, bowled by Fuller for eight but Steven Mullaney and Darren Pattinson were the only other Notts batsmen to fall for single figures.

In the main, the Outlaws’ batsmen perished playing attacking shots in looking to build on the firm foundations laid by Hales and Wessels in their partnership of 77 from 44 balls with Paul Franks hitting an unbeaten 28.

Gloucestershire finished 20 runs short of their victory target at 247-9 underpinned by Cockbain’s 79. Former Notts all-rounder Kevin O’Brien made 15 before he was trapped lbw by Darren Pattinson who finished with 2-59.

Luke Fletcher’s three wicket haul included the dismantling of Gloucestershire’s opening partnership, the end of Cockbain’s stand with a ball around his legs, and the dismissal of New Zealand Test batsman Kane Williamson.

Nottinghamshire return to LV= County Championship action on Tuesday when they face title challengers Lancashire at Southport.
