England captain Andrew Strauss praised his bowlers and double centurion Kevin Pietersen after beating India by 196 runs at Lord's in the 2,000th Test match, which put the home side 1-0 up in the four-match npower Test series.

India were bowled out for 261 as James Anderson took 5-65 and Strauss was full of praise for his side's bowling unit.

Strauss said: "It was an outstanding Test match and an outstanding performance.

"The way the bowlers stuck at their task was great.

"It's always tough to bowl sides out on the fifth day here. If you're going to do it, you need a disciplined bowling attack.

"We back ourselves to bowl teams out, we back ourselves to get 20 wickets."

Strauss also praised the efforts of Pietersen, whose double century in the first innings set England up to take the 1-0 series lead.

"Kevin Pietersen's double hundred was one of the great England innings I've seen in recent times," he added.

Pietersen deflected the plaudits to his team-mates as he said: "It's brilliant for the team but we know it's only one game out of four. We know it's going to be tough to keep dominating this great India team."

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he hoped to have good news about strike bowler Zaheer Khan, who is a doubt for the second Test which starts at Trent Bridge on Friday because of a hamstring injury suffered during England's first innings.

He said: "Missing Zaheer Khan early was a big blow. He might bowl in Trent Bridge, we will see what kind of improvement there is."

Despite the margin of defeat Dhoni remained defiant as he added: "It's a long series, three more Test matches, and I think there's a lot of exciting cricket to go."

England bowler Stuart Broad said: "We set a target of five down at tea so we weren't panicking when we got spells without wickets.

"We applied the pressure all day and you can see the delight in the lads going 1-0 up in the series."
