Karl Turner could make his first class debut for Nottinghamshire against Lancashire at Southport after impressing during an extended trial with the Second XI.

Turner scored 186 against MCC universities and has had his claims for a first team place endorsed by Paul Johnson and Ali Brown.

Director of Cricket Mick Newell will hold discussions with captain Chris Read before finalising the selection with a call likely to be made between Turner and Neil Edwards.

“We’ll make a late call on Karl but he has impressed people with the way he has batted for the Second Eleven and he is keen to secure a contract here,” said Newell.

“We like to give players a number of games before we consider their place in the side but there is constant pressure to perform and it is important that players are in form and put themselves in line for a call when we decide that changes need to be made.”

Adam Voges is fit to play after resting a sore elbow over the weekend with Graeme White set to retain his place as second spinner to Samit Patel.

“We expect the pitch to suit Lancashire’s spinners and club wickets don’t tend to improve over the course of four days,” said Newell.

“We’re learning about Graeme’s abilities in four-day cricket and it’s important that he gains the confidence of the team and the captain gains confidence in him.”

Lancashire enjoyed a hard-fought victory over Yorkshire in their previous LV= County Championship encounter and have emerged as credible title contenders.
