Notts Outlaws' Riki Wessels insists breaking up his highly effective t20 opening partnership with Alex Hales to make way for overseas star Tamim Iqbal was the right thing to do.

Batting at the top of the order in the first ten matches, the potent pair were both among the competition's top six run scorers.

But the arrival of Bangladeshi star Tamim has seen Wessels dropped down the batting order to accommodate the left-hander.

The former Northants man believes the dynamic of the team must come first and that the current line-up can be just as effective, ahead of tonight's trip to take on Worcestershire.

"I did enjoy opening and I had done quite well in that role, but Tamim is an international opener and has international hundreds playing against England," said Wessels.

"When I batted with Alex at the top, we got a partnership going where one day I would get off to a flyer and the next day it would be him.

"We had ten innings together and 600 runs between the two of us during that time, so we were going pretty well.

"But that's cricket. You can't always bat where you want to bat and always bowl where you want to bowl.

"It would be quite strange to have him slot in at four or five when he's here to be an opening batsman.

"It's part of the game and so as long as I'm in the team and still contributing in some way then I'm happy."

Notts are going great guns in the North Group, leading the way with 20 points from 12 games after their six-wicket victory at Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday – where both Wessels and Iqbal made valuable contributions with the bat.

Wessels said: "We have got into a good rhythm in t20. It's a format where good form is quite hard to keep because the games are quite close.

"At the moment, things are going really well for us. I think our bowlers have done a great job so far and we always back ourselves with the batting.

"Obviously losing Huss (David Hussey) was a big thing, but we have a lot of other good players and you can see that in the performances we have put in.

"We are just pushing for win after win now to make sure of that home quarter-final and push on from there."
