West Indian Cavaliers 242-6 dec (47.5 overs) drew with Notts Academy 190-9 (45overs)
Cavaliers 14pts / Notts Academy 11pts
Early rain reduced the game to 48 overs per side initially and then showers further curtailed the time available as the Academy’s encounter with Cavs became a time game.
However, this in no way reduced the competitive nature of the fixture as it reached a tense climax.
The Cavaliers, who had batted first at the invitation of the Academy, scored 242-6 when rain drove the teams from the field with one ball of the innings remaining. They declared during the tea interval when the rain continued to fall.
Notts had restrained the Cavs’ talented line up which included three former Test players. Usman Afzaal (31) and Alex Tudor (16) both fell to Andrew Parkin-Coates who finished with 3-26 from 9 overs.
Indeed, with five overs remaining the score stood at 184-6 but Morteza Ali (46) and Steve Atkinson (25) tucked in to the returning pace bowlers adding 58.
Academy openers Tom Rowe and Sam Kelsall acquitted themselves well adding 92 for the first wicket.
Rowe was the first to go for 54 caught by Tudor. Oli Swann went for 16 and then Kelsall was lbw for 55 with the score on 144-3. Usman Afzaal claimed four of the first five wickets to fall.
The remaining batting faltered against the spin of Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq who took 3-28 from 14 overs.
Jake Ball was run out off the last ball of the final over as he tried to obtain a further batting point. The Academy achieved a draw with George Bacon left not out on 21.
