Second Eleven Championship Day 1
Nottinghamshire v Leicestershire at Lady Bay
Nottinghamshire 339-9
At 178-8, maximum batting points seemed like a distant dream but trialist Peter Turnbull and pacemen George Bacon and Brett Hutton had other ideas.
Turnbull, who had scored 95 for Cambridge University at Lady Bay in a pre-season friendly and came on recommendation of the University coach and former Notts keeper Chris Scott, helped guide Notts to 339 first in company of Bacon who scored just 19 but helped to add 57 for the 8th wicket.
Then, joined by Hutton, the pair added an unbeaten 104 for the last wicket by the close.
Turnbull scored his century from 134 balls including twelve fours and a six whilst Hutton was certainly not the junior partner reaching his 50 shortly before the close from 70 balls with seven fours.
Earlier a carefully composed opening stand of 61 between Tom Rowe (26) and Sam Kelsall (41) on a pitch which gave assistance to the bowlers seemed to have laid the foundation for the innings, however wickets fell regularly until partnerships prospered.
For the visitors, Shiv Thakor took 3-59 whilst Jamie Sykes, who at one stage had figures of 1-20 from 18 overs, bowled his slow left arm economically. Gurney 2-70, Wyatt 2-74 and Cliff 1-28 were the other wicket takers.
