Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell has tipped Stuart Broad as a Test captain of the future following his appointment as England’s on-field leader in Twenty20 internationals.

Broad’s Nottinghamshire appearances have been limited since his arrival from Leicestershire in 2008 as he quickly established himself as an international reagular in all formats.

“It’s a great honour for Stuart and a stepping stone for potential future captaincy in all forms of the game,” said Newell.

“Stuart came into international cricket very young and inexperienced but he has learned so much in the last few years and this appointment is something that he is very proud of." Chris Broad

“Stuart is a very encouraging presence in the dressing room and more importantly he is a leader by example in the way he goes about his business.

“I think that Andrew Strauss will continue as Test captain for at least two or three more years and when he retires England will have two ready made options with significant captaincy experience.”

With Alistair Cook now installed as One Day captain, England have a trio of on-field leaders.

“The three captains will have their own style but I think we’ll see a united fron because they all support Andy Flower and Stuart and Alistair are right behind Andrew Strauss,” said Newell.

“Stuart will have a big workload as an all-rounder in Twenty20 cricket but he’ll be delighted to have earned this opportunity.”

Chris Broad spoke of the pride he had when Stuart informed him that he had been awarded the captaincy.

“Stuart came into international cricket very young and inexperienced but he has learned so much in the last few years and this appointment is something that he is very proud of,” said Chris.

“These appointments are obviously a trial for the England selectors who are looking for consistency. I expect that Alistair Cook will step up when Andrew Strauss retires and then a decision will be made as to whether Stuart will lead the one day side.

“What is clear is that Stuart, Alistair and Andrew will share their thoughts and experiences and work effectively together.”
