Former Nottinghamshire batsman Jimmy Adams has returned to county cricket by becoming Kent’s new Head Coach.
The former West Indian Test captain replaces Paul Farbrace, who left the post in September. Adams, who will be 44 on January 9th, has left his post as Technical Director to the Jamaica Cricket Development programme, to take over at Canterbury.
Adams spent the 1994 season at Trent Bridge, scoring 950 first class runs in 18 appearances, at an average of 35.18. The highest of his three hundreds for Notts was the unbeaten 144 he scored against Somerset at the County Ground, Taunton.
Adams spent the 1994 season at Trent Bridge, scoring 950 first class runs in 18 appearances.
He also took 23 wickets with his orthodox slow left-arm spin, with a best of 4-63 against Essex at Ilford. In one-day matches for Nottinghamshire, he played 20 times, scoring 819 runs and taking 6 wickets.
After making his Test debut against South Africa in 1992 Adams gained an early reputation as an elegant, fluent stroke-player. The first of his six Test centuries came against England in Georgetown, in just his sixth match and three more hundreds followed in quick succession.
Adams succeeded Brian Lara as Test captain in 2000 but his reign ended with a 5-0 whitewash in Australia, which also brought an end to his 54-cap Test career. He also appeared in 127 ODIs.
A popular and forthright analyst of the game, Adams has worked in the media in recent times but now turns his attention to his new role with a Kent side that are currently in the Second Division of the LV= County Championship.
On his appointment, Adams said: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity as Head Coach at Kent Cricket. They are a county with a proud history and tradition. I look forward to working towards further success in the year to come and can’t wait to get started.”
Graham Johnson, Kent’s Chairman of Cricket commented, “We are delighted to have had such a strong field of candidates for the role. I believe we have run an extremely thorough process to select our new Head Coach, and are delighted that Jimmy will take up the position. He has a strong desire to see young players develop and this shone through in our discussions with him. He also has a tremendous amount of experience from his time in international cricket – particularly as Captain. We welcome Jimmy to Kent and wish him the very best of luck.”
Amongst his new charges will be former Notts seamer Charlie Shreck, who moved from Trent Bridge to the St Lawrence Ground at the end of last season.
