Nottinghamshire bowler Stuart Broad was the West Indies' chief tormenter as the tourists reached stumps at 243-9 on the first day of the First Investec Test at Lord's.
He struck again with the first ball of day two to end with career best figures of 7/72 to ensure his name will be scribed upon the honours board for a second time following his hundred against Pakistan in 2010.
"It's a very proud day for me but more importantly we're in a great position in the Test match," he said.
"We knew it was going to be a long day's cricket, so we had to be patient and we thought seven down at night would be a really good day, so to have them nine down is really pleasing.
"It swung for us but it was a slow wicket to start with. It was hard to get the right length, but the wicket quickened up a bit in that last session.
"I think in the morning session we bowled OK, we weren't up to the standards we set ourselves but we came back really strongly after lunch and finished well."
Tickets remain on sale for the Second Investec Test which begins at Trent Bridge on Friday 29 May.
