Nottinghamshire’s Second XI began their competitive season with a six-wicket victory over MCC Young Cricketers at Radlett CC.
MCC got off to a flying start with wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter and opening partner Chris Piesley both scoring at better than a run a ball in a stand of 81.
Notts then pulled it back in the middle overs through the spin duo of Graeme White and Sam Wood, a turn in the game.
A late burst from Scott McKechnie (44*) and Zain Shahzad (11*) lifted the Young Cricketers up to 231-8 from there 40 overs.
For Notts the pick of the bowlers was White with 2-27 whilst George Bacon and Ben Kitt also picking up two wickets apiece.
In reply, Sam Kelsall got Notts off to the start they needed as he played a key innings at the top of the order, eventually falling for 69.
Johnson saw this as one of the positives of the game with all batsmen scoring at a steady strike rate and batting with good intent.
“They got off to a good start and looked like they could get 250 but the spinners pulled it back in the middle overs,” he said.
“Unfortunately none of our batsmencarried it on all the way through but we still got home even if it was an over or two too tight for my liking.
“We showed competence with the pink ball in our first game and it was encouraging that there were five or six academy players. These were complemented by some senior players and ultimately we got the win.”
