Trent Bridge will host white ball cricket once more this season, after Notts Outlaws secured a home semi-final of this summer’s YB40 competition.

The Outlaws beat Kent Spitfires by five wickets in their final group stage match, and all-rounder Samit Patel praised the side’s bowling performance in the first innings.

“The first innings performances of the bowlers were excellent,” he said.

“We were hitting the top of off, which is something we always want to say, and it made life easier for the batsmen, giving them a target that we knew we could chase down.”

“The squad that we have is very strong, and on our day we can take on anyone." Samit Patel

Patel, alongside Alex Hales, formed a formidable partnership that added 107 runs. Both players passed 50 as their innings broke the back of the Kent bowling attack, setting up the Outlaws’ victory nicely.

“I would have liked to finish the game not out, but that didn’t happen,” said Patel.

“Alex was unfortunate to have departed in the way that he did and it was a good partnership, that’s what we’ll need to keep doing if we want to keep winning matches.”

The Outlaws completed their passage into the YB40 semi-finals at the third time of asking, following defeats to Sussex and Worcestershire. For Patel, the team’s performance against Kent reflected their difficulties, but also highlighted their strengths.

“We knew we had to go back and do the basics right,” he said.

“It shows that if we can put our minds to it, we can achieve anything.

“The squad that we have is very strong, and on our day we can take on anyone

“The cricket that we played, people will notice, and we’ll be disappointed if we don’t get to a Lord’s final.”

Next in line are Somerset, whose performances against the Outlaws in t20 in recent years will still be strong in the memory of Notts players and fans. However, Patel thinks they’ll be a different prospect this time around.

“The games where we feared them came through Kieron Pollard. He was one of those destructive players,” he said.

“They don’t have him but it doesn’t mean that we’re going to take them lightly.

“If we do the right things, get the basics right, they shouldn’t be able to live with us.

“It’s nice to have home advantage, we’ll have to see what the wicket is like and adapt to the conditions on the day,” added Patel.

“We’re two wins from silverware. The match against Kent was a quarter-final which we came and won, and this will be no different.

“We’ll take one step at a time, get past Somerset first of all and then we can think about silverware.”
