For the second time in as many days a Nottinghamshire star sealed victory for England with a five-wicket haul.
This time it was Graeme Swann who took five wickets against Essex a day after Jenny Gunn’s heroics against Pakistan Women.
Swann was integral in England’s 228-run win as their preparations for the Ashes came to a close.
After batting on during the morning session England eventually declared on 279-4 with Ian Bell and Matt Prior sharing important time at the crease.
In reply, Essex needed an unlikely 414 for victory and Swann was immediately in the action taking the first three wickets.
He then returned to finish of the job, removing Mark Pettini and David Masters to end with figures of 5-68.
After the match Swann said: “I needed that lengthy bowl after not bowling much recently in the Champions Trophy.
“Then I got whacked on the arm and missed most of the first innings so I wanted to bowl 20 overs plus in the second and fortunately I did that.
“Going into that first Test at Trent Bridge it is important. I am happy with my game and I feel I am at that place now.
“I can’t wait for the Notts public to get behind us at what is the best ground in the country, let’s face it.”
The first Ashes test is just under a week away starting on Wednesday July 10 at Trent Bridge.
