Notts Outlaws travel to Edgbaston looking to strengthen their position at the top of Group A, having won all of their opening three matches.
The Bears are without a win so far, having lost against Kent Spitfires before rain wiped out their fixture against Sussex Sharks.
Head to Head
Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire have met on 54 previous occasions in one-day competition, with the fixtures taking place in a variety of competitions scheduled from anything between 40 and 60 overs per side.
The head-to-head balance is tipped slightly in Notts favour, with 26 victories to the Bears’ 23. Five matches have remained incomplete, either washed-out totally or abandoned after starting.
At Edgbaston alone, the two counties have met on 29 occasions, with thirteen wins apiece and three matches failing to produce a result.
First And Last Meeting
The first meeting between the two sides took place at Edgbaston in 1969, with Warwickshire coming out on top, by just 11 runs, in a Players County League contest.
West Indian batsman Rohan Kanhai scored 102 for the home side, before becoming one of four victims for Garfield Sobers, as Warwicks reached 192 all out.
Notts replied with 181-7 at the end of their forty overs.
Teams: Warwicks; RW Barber, RB Kanhai, JA Jameson, MJK Smith, DL Amiss, TW Cartwright, DJ Brown, W Blenkiron, BSV Timms, NM McVicker, LR Gibbs
Notts; JB Bolus, MJ Harris, SB Hassan, GS Sobers, MJ Smedley, DL Murray, G Frost, MNS Taylor, C Forbes, DJ Halfyard, B Stead
The most recent one-day clash occurred three years ago when another Edgbaston contest saw the sides in a shoot-out to determine which team would qualify for the semi finals of the CB40 competition.
A Saturday afternoon televised match was won by Warwickshire, thanks to an undefeated 84 from Jonathan Trott as his side picked up a 7-wicket success.
Earlier Adam Voges had made 54 for the Outlaws but a total of 192 all out was never likely to be enough.
Stats
Nottinghamshire’s highest one-day score at Edgbaston came in a Gillette Cup tie in 1979. With Paul Todd scoring 105 in his side’s 79-run success, the visitors reached an all out score of 265 from exactly 60 overs.
Their highest total in a 40-overs per side match is the 260-5 that was run up in 1976, with Basharat Hassan making 93.
The highest individual score by a Notts batsman in one-day cricket is also held by Hassan, who scored an unbeaten 120 in 1981. Apart from Hassan and Todd (both mentioned above), only Paul Johnson has also scored a century for the visitors in the meetings in Birmingham.
Warwickshire’s highest home score in 40-over cricket against Notts is the 294-6 they made in 1994. West Indian legend Brian Lara made 75 for the Bears before being bowled by Bobby Chapman, making his debut for the Outlaws.
Paul Strang is the only Notts bowler to take 5 wickets in an innings at Edgbaston, eventually finishing with 6-32 in the 1998 match.
Played For Both
Vasbert Drakes (pictured) spent the 1999 season on the Trent Bridge staff and produced, arguably, the most stunning bowling performance in domestic one-day cricket.
Playing against Derbyshire at Trent Bridge, the Barbadian star was entrusted with bowling the final over of the match with only 10 runs needed.
To everyone’s sheer astonishment, Drakes produced a once-in-a-lifetime finish. He yorked Phil DeFreitas with his first ball, removed Adrian Rollins’ middle stump with the next and had James Pyemont given out lbw for his hat-trick.
For good measure a full-length delivery then took out the leg stump of Simon Lacey. Four wickets in four balls – the only time it has happened for a Notts bowler in the shortened format of the game.
A dot ball and a single ended the over, enabling Notts to defeat their closest rivals in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
Drakes played 16 one-day matches for Notts and 18 for Warwickshire, who he joined in 2001.
Others to have appeared for both counties include; Deryck Murray, Dilip Doshi, Eddie Hemmings, Daniel Vettori, Anurag Singh and Mark Wagh.
History
The highest partnership by either side in the series is the 188 that Derek Randall and Basharat Hassan put on together for the first wicket at Edgbaston in 1981. Despite the flying start Notts could only make 221-3 and Warwickshire chased it down thanks to a century from Alvin Kallicharran.
Bracegirdle's Interesting Fact
Nigel Murray, son of former Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and West Indies wicketkeeper Deryck Murray, is the current Ticket Officer Manager at Trent Bridge.
Milestones
Nearing milestones for the amount of one-day runs scored are Chris Read (4919) and Alex Hales (1914).
Should Read return to the side, after missing the championship win over Surrey, he would be making his 236th one-day appearance for Notts, going past John Birch to move into ninth position in the overall table, still 171 matches behind Derek Randall, who tops the list.
Team News
The Outlaws have used thirteen players in their three matches so far, although Graeme Swann won’t be available as he is on England duty.
Mick Newell’s final team selection will revolve around Chris Read’s availability after the captain was sidelined for the Surrey match with a neck injury.
Warwickshire’s week began with suggestions that their New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel may be called into the Kiwis squad for the Headingley Test.
As it was, the former Notts and Warwicks spinner Daniel Vettori was called up instead.
