Brett Hutton hitting a mammoth unbeaten 123 was the highlight of the second day of Nottinghamshire’s Second XI championship match against Leicestershire. Notts’ first innings finished at 338 all out, a lead of 120.
Resuming on 72-1, Notts were in trouble from the first delivery, Tom Rowe departing for an overnight 8 with no addition. Raine struck for a second time in the seventh over to remove Kelsall (8), caught behind to leave the score 85-3. Only one run was added for the fourth, that of Sam Wood, leaving in similar fashion without scoring.
The innings progressed into its 44th over before Matt Cross was bowled by Wells for 3, before Tillcock fell for 1. When Langford was adjudged lbw to Taylor in the 53rd, Notts were 126-7, still 82 behind Leicestershire’s first innings total of 218 with three wickets in hand.
Fortunately, Brett Hutton and Max O’Dowd settled the ship and took Notts to 167-7 for no further loss by lunch. Their partnership grew through the afternoon session, Hutton reaching his 50 in the 77th over, taking Notts to 200.
The scores were level in the 85th, and when the pair’s 100 partnership arrived three overs later, Hutton was on 71, already his highest second XI score. The promising work ended when O’Dowd was caught behind for 30 off the bowling of Robinson, before Phillips departed for 17, Notts working their way to 255-9.
Hutton continued with last man Luke Wood, his century coming off 156 balls in the 103rd over. After tea, the score continued to tick over, Hutton ending on an excellent unbeaten 123 (16 fours, 2 sixes) after Luke Wood was caught off Wells for 30, Notts 338 all out.
Leicestershire’s openers Angus Robson and Adam Waite faced eighteen overs in the day, before finishing on 40 without loss.
