After spending four days on the south coast, playing against Sussex at Hove, Nottinghamshire will have more sea air to enjoy this week after transferring to the east coast to face Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Despite having the better of things against the league leaders, Notts had to settle for a draw at Hove, which leaves them in fifth position, with 63 points.

They have a game in hand on the four sides who sit above them, including Yorkshire, who currently sit in second position in the First Division table, with 87 points from six matches.

They were heavily defeated at home by Sussex in their opener but since then have embarked on a five-match unbeaten run, beating Derbyshire, Durham and Warwickshire – and drawing home and away with Somerset.

Head to Head

In first class cricket there have been 248 meetings between the two counties, with Yorkshire leading the way with 88 victories to Notts’ 48. There have been a further 112 draws and another five matches were abandoned.

Many of those matches were played before the introduction of the county championship, with statistics from that competition again favouring Yorkshire.

In 199 county championship matches they have completed 71 wins to Nottinghamshire’s 26, with 97 draws and 5 rained off.

Exactly 100 of those matches have been played as Yorkshire home fixtures, with a huge number of different grounds staging them.

Apart from this week’s venue, Notts have visited such outposts as Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Hull, Harrogate, Middlesbrough, Sheffield and Bradford, as well as the county headquarters in Leeds.

Solely in Scarborough, the record shows Yorkshire to have won five and drawn five of the eleven meetings, with Nottinghamshire’s only success occurring in 1990.

Last Meeting

The last occasion in which the two counties met at North Marine Road in first class action was during the 2009 season. Batting first, Notts made 395, helped by two astonishing innings. Australia’s David Hussey scored 189 from 205 deliveries faced. He hit 26 boundaries and 7 sixes, yet was outgunned in the maximum department by Andre Adams, who cleared the ropes on 8 occasions on his way to a 57-ball score of 84.

Adams shared in a last wicket partnership of 93 with Ryan Sidebottom and both then excelled with the ball as Yorkshire were bundled out for 231. Sidebottom took 5-59 and Adams claimed 4-39 as the Tykes were made to follow-on.

Andrew Gales scored 99 to ensure his side reached safety in the second innings with the captain’s shaking hands at 232-5 declared.

Stats

In the eleven meetings at Scarborough there have been 14 centuries scored, seven for each side.

Brian Close made 184 in 1960, the highest score by a home player. Geoffrey Boycott scored 129 in 1978 and an unbeaten 125 in 1985.

The other centurions have been George Hirst (155 in 1900), Martyn Moxon (123 in 1990), Richard Blakey (112* in 1992) and Darren Lehmann (131 in 1998).

Nottinghamshire’s record is similar. David Hussey’s 189 four years ago is the top score. Tim Robinson (118 in 1985 and 114 in 1998) and Chris Broad (126 in 1990 and 120 two years later) both scored a couple of hundreds, with the other three-figure scores coming from William Goodacre (104* in 1900) and Paul Johnson (149 in 1990).

Fred Trueman proved to be the scourge of the Notts batsmen in two of the Scarborough meetings. He blitzed through them with figures of 7-23, which included a hat-trick, in 1955, as the visitors second innings folded for just 105.

Five years later, the same bowler took 6-39 in an innings success.

In 1964 England spinner Raymond Illingworth took seven Notts wickets for 89 and other Yorkshire bowlers to grab five-wicket hauls have been Peter Hartley (5-25 in 1985) and Darren Gough (6-36 in 1996).

New Zealand’s Chris Cairns has the best bowling figures for a Notts player in the games. His 6-110 came in the 1996 match. Two years later Paul Franks and Russell Evans evenly shared the wickets as Yorkshire’s second innings ended on 405. Franks took 5-107 with Evans taking 5-120.

Other 5-wicket hauls belong to Keith Gillhouley (5-102 in 1964) and to Ryan Sidebottom (5-59 four years ago).
Graeme Archer made his county championship debut for Notts in the 1992 match and Jamie Hart made his first class debut two years later.

Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid currently tops the first class batting averages with an astonishing haul of 509 runs from 7 innings, 5 of which have been not outs. His three centuries have propelled him to an average of 254.50.

Played For Both

Notts are likely to renew acquaintances this week with one of their former favourites. Ryan Sidebottom spent seven years with Nottinghamshire, sandwiched between two spells for Yorkshire. A left-arm quick bowler, he played in 65 first-class matches for Notts, taking 216 wickets at 25.20. Forty-seven List A matches produced 43 wickets and a further 25 wickets came in 25 Twenty20 contests. A member of the side which won the County Championship in 2005 and 2010, Sidebottom was also an England regular in all three formats of the game during his time with the county.

Ryan’s final appearance for Notts was in the 2010 title-winning match against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Amongst the others to have appeared for both counties are two current Nottinghamshire players, Ajmal Shahzad and Michael Lumb - plus Greg Blewett, Brian Bolus, Mike Bore, Mark Broadhurst, Gareth Clough, Younis Khan, Ashley Metcalfe, Barry Stead, Richard Stemp and Alex Wharf.

Did You Know?

Nottinghamshire’s Michael Lumb began his career with Yorkshire and has made eight first class appearances in matches at this week’s venue, North Marine Road.

Michael’s father, Richard Lumb, also played for the White Rose county and scored the winning runs, 57 not out, in an 8-wicket victory over Notts on the ground in 1978.

Their respective records at Scarborough are:Richard:18 matches, 1029 runs in 32 innings, with a best of 110.Michael:8 matches, 352 runs in 14 innings, with a best of 64.
