Nottinghamshire meet the Netherlands in Group A of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition this Sunday. With their success over Warwickshire Bears at Edgbaston on Thursday evening, the Outlaws now top the group with four wins out of four.
This will be the first away fixture for the Netherlands and they’ll be hoping for a change in fortune with regards to the weather, having had both of this week’s matches, against Sussex Sharks and Northamptonshire Steelbacks, rained off.
The other game, at home to Kent Spitfires, resulted in an emphatic victory for the county side, after dismissing the Dutch for just 101 runs.
Head to Head
Nottinghamshire and Netherlands will be meeting for the first time. The return match, next month, will be staged in Truro as part of the Cornish Cricket Festival. The two sides will meet at Boscawen Park, Truro on Wednesday 19th June.
Stats
In the 2007 Cricket World Cup Daan van Bunge, of the Netherlands, was the unfortunate bowler when South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs hit him for the maximum six sixes in one over, in a match played at Warner Park, St Kitts.
Played For Both
Former Dutch international T20 specialist Dirk Nannes appeared for the Notts Outlaws in 2010 and was a member of the side that participated at Finals Day at the Rose Bowl.
Nannes, a left-arm quick bowler, appeared for the Netherlands in the ICC World T20 tournament in 2009, making his debut in a victory over England at Lord’s.
He made 16 appearances for Notts, a year later, taking 17 wickets.
History
Cricket has been played in the Netherlands since the 19th century but it is only in the modern era that they have enhanced their reputation on the world stage.
They have competed in four Cricket World Cups, 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2011 but their most famous achievement came in the 2009 ICC World T20 competition when they pulled off a 4-wicket success over England at Lord’s.
Since 1996 they have joined the English counties in their one-day knock-out and league competitions, yet have never met Nottinghamshire before.
Bracegirdle's Interesting Fact
Nottinghamshire’s loss to Scotland in the Clydesdale Bank 40, last season, was the first time that the county had ever lost to non-first class opposition in any of the main domestic one-day competitions.
Milestones
Chris Read has scored 4919 one-day runs in his career and Alex Hales has now registered 1922.
Notts last achieved five consecutive one-day wins in 2010, with victories over Hampshire, Scotland (twice), Durham and Warwickshire.
In winning their opening four matches Notts have made their best start to any one-day season since 1976, when they won their first seven matches, four in the Benson and Hedges Cup group stages and three in the John Player Sunday League.
Team News
The Outlaws were forced into a late change at Edgbaston when Andy Carter pulled out after suffering a back spasm in the warm-ups.
Ajmal Shahzad stepped in to make his one-day debut for Notts and pick up his first wicket in white ball cricket for the county.
Mick Newell will await a fitness check on Carter, before deciding whether or not to stick with the same eleven that played in Birmingham.
