Nottinghamshire’s Second XI enjoyed a competitive first day in the first Championship match of the season against Yorkshire, bowling the visitors out for 255 before ending the day on 85-3.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Yorkshire were pegged back early by Ajmal Shahzad, who had Elliott Kallis caught behind by Matt Cross without scoring. Dan Hodgson met a similar fate, caught behind off Brett Hutton, leaving Yorkshire 33-2 after 12 overs. Jack Leaning joined Jonathan Tattersall and the pair passed 50 in the 18th, before Luke Wood trapped Leaning for 1 in the next. Tattersall made 40 before being Ben Kitt’s first victim of the day, a second consecutive LBW decision.
Will Rhodes and Oliver Robinson saw Yorshire through to lunch, ending the session on 112-4.
Shahzad returned to claim his second four overs into the afternoon session, yorking Robinson expertly for 14. At 115-5 Nottinghamshire looked to press their advantage, but a partnership of 75 from Rhodes and Azeem Rafiq for the sixth wicket frustrated the attack. Rhodes reached 50 in the 49th over, but five overs later Rafiq was caught by Sam Kelsall off Luke Wood. One wicket bred two, and Paul Franks accounted for Rhodes five overs later, his 71 helping Yorkshire reach 192-7.
Rich Pyrah and Josh Shaw continued in the middle, before Wood added Shaw to his scalps for the day, trapping him LBW for two. He then bowled Pyrah, before a stubborn last-wicket partnership between Ben Coad and Matthew Fisher added 49 before being eventually broken by Brett Hutton.
Yorkshire finished with 255 all out at tea, Luke Wood the pick of the Notts bowlers, his 4-53 the standout figures.
Into the evening session, Sam Kelsall and Hassan Azad reached 50 without loss, before two wickets in two balls accounted for Azad and Sam Wood. Kelsall was trapped in the next over, but Adam Tillcock and Will Root navigated through to the close to end the day on 85-3.
