Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor took a huge stride towards England’s ICC Cricket World Cup squad with a composed 68 that helped condemn Sri Lanka to defeat in Pallekele.

With England's innings beginning today after rain washed out the One-Day International after Sri Lanka posted 239, Taylor, batting at three, was called into action after England lost Moeen Ali early.

While his innings provided the impetus for England, his knock was outshone only by Joe Root whose unbeaten century took England across the line for victory by five wickets with five balls to spare.

“We were pretty confident as long as Rooty was there,” said Taylor.

“When you’ve got Buttler and Morgan to come, you always know there is enough hitting to get across the line, even if you lose a couple of wickets in the manner that we did.”

Taylor has spent too long in the international wilderness to take his opportunity for granted but hopes his success against spin can stand him in good stead for a sustained spell in the side.

“I’ve had limited opportunities so when they come along they have to be taken,” said Taylor.

“I like playing spin and although I had to be busy, the ball skidded on nicely and I was able to get it away.”

England and Sri Lanka will contest the two remaining matches in the series in Pallekele and Colombo.
