After travelling across Sri Lanka from Colombo to Hambantota for the third in their seven-match ODI series, England will be hoping that a change in surroundings will also lead to a change in fortunes.

After suffering a narrow defeat in the first ODI, they suffered an eight-wicket loss to the Sri Lankans on Saturday, leading to a fresh wave of criticism aimed at captain Alastair Cook. James Tredwell has spoken ahead of the match and given his support to his captain. 

“Everyone keeps going on about him but we don't really notice it in the dressing room,” he said. 

“He's pretty level headed and calm about it. He is a class player and I'm sure there is a score around the corner. 

"We are a collective and we want to put a team performance together for all of us. 

"If we can get a win under our belts and do it in the right fashion then that will give us confidence going forward and hopefully that will be the case in this game.”

England’s form has also seen the clamour to see Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales and James Taylor in action increase. After enjoying dominant seasons in 50-over cricket for their county, England’s lineup increasingly looks as if fresh faces would provide new impetus for its batsmen. 

Tredwell continued to add that while the side are in need of a confidence boost, he felt that one victory would push them toward their goal. 

"We are a collective and we want to put a team performance together for all of us,” he said.

If we can get a win under our belts and do it in the right fashion then that will give us confidence going forward and hopefully that will be the case in this game. 

“We're all working as hard as we can on our skills and when things don't go right, it is not a nice feeling for the individual doing it as well as those watching it.

“We're trying as hard as we can to get things right, and if we get everything right in the same game we're going to hurt people. Certainly the method we used with the bat in the first game, if we can carry that forward and get our skills right with the ball we're going to be a useful unit."
