Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell believe’s England’s proficiency against spin will be key to their success in the ICC World Twenty20.
Stuart Broad, Michael Lumb and Alex Hales have all been named in England’s squads for the tour of the West Indies and the global showpiece in Bangladesh with Harry Gurney travelling as 16th man following his inclusion for the tour of the West Indies.
“England won’t start as tournament favourites which could favour them if they can find a clear method to score against spin and bowl their own to a high standard,” said Newell.
“They may have to beat South Africa or New Zealand to progress to the semi-finals which will be tough in those conditions but they will fancy their chances of doing that.”
Samit Patel and James Taylor has been omitted from the squad despite being named in the provisional 30.
“This tournament may have suited Samit who has to see Twenty20 cricket as his route back into the setup but it’s up to him to put statistics in front of the selectors that make it impossible not to pick him,” said Newell.
“He’s very keen to play in the IPL and he’ll be keen to earn a contract and put in a series of strong performances.”
Michael Lumb and Alex Hales will hope to continue their customary partnership at the top of the order although Lumb was overlooked for the third T20 International in Australia.
“Michael Lumb’s place is more secure in the absence of Kevin Pietersen but it does seem that he needs to justify his position in the England team quite regularly,” said Newell.
“Realistically, this could be Michael’s last global tournament and he would have wanted to make more of a mark in the series against Australia.”
Newell has highlighted Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali and Middlesex’s Eoin Morgan as two to watch.
“Moeen Ali is an interesting pick as an all-round cricketer who you could see going well and it will be crucial that Eoin Morgan prospers against the spinners,” said Newell.
“T20 can be a fickle game but there is a lot of talent in the England side.”
