COULD BROAD INJURY OPEN DOOR FOR GURNEY?

England’s worries ahead of the ICC World T20 in Bangladesh have deepened following the news that captain Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remaining matches in the Caribbean with a knee injury.

In England’s 27-run defeat to the West Indies in Barbados on Sunday, Broad could only bowl two overs and was visibly limping at the crease.

"I've had a patellar tendonitis problem in my right knee for quite a long time," said Broad.

"With the workload I've had all winter, I've not really had any breaks, so it's got worse and worse.

"I just caught my knee in the sandy ground at Antigua and got a lot of inflammation and fluid on it.

“I won't be playing the next two games and I'll have to have some kind of injection to get me through the World Twenty20, I'd think."

Despite missing the two upcoming matches, Broad took to Twitter to reassure fans that his injury would only rule him out of action for seven days.

Nottinghamshire’s Harry Gurney and Chris Jordan are the other two seamers present in the Caribbean, and both will be in with a chance of selection for the two remaining matches in the series.

Jordan was named in the side for the first ODI of the series, bowling nine wicketless overs for 67 runs. Gurney, however, has bided his time and must surely be in contention for selection.

After an excellent season for Nottinghamshire, which yielded 74 wickets across all three formats, Gurney was selected to travel to Australia as a specialist left-arm net bowler to aid England’s Ashes preparations.

Now a member of the squad in his own right, left-handed Gurney offers an excellent alternative to the likes of Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach, and his growing reputation as an effective death bowler could stand him in good stead for selection.

Only time will tell, though, but by the time Eoin Morgan returns to the Kensington Oval for the toss ahead of the second T20 international, Gurney could well be receiving a well-deserved England cap.
