Nottinghamshire’s Librarian and Historian Peter Wynne-Thomas has completed his latest labour of love, providing the authoritative view on William Clarke, the Grandfather of Trent Bridge.
In William Clarke – The Old General, Wynne-Thomas traces the background of one of cricketing history’s most illustrious characters, one who single-handedly changed the face of the cricketing world.
Clarke’s playing history boasted much – as effective an under-arm bowler as had been seen at the time – but his story continued long after his retirement.
His romancing of the landlady of the Trent Bridge Inn led to the foundations of Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, while his All-England Eleven touring side made history thanks to the newly-established railways of the time.
However, no account of his life can compare with Wynne-Thomas’ exhaustive exploration of one of cricket’s original visionaries.
