It was a case of Nottinghamshire past clashing with possible future in Hobart when touring Scotland took on Tasmania in one of the associate nation’s warm up games for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Second XI wicketkeeper Matt Cross opened proceedings for the tourists, with the hosts boasting Ed Cowan in their ranks, and it was the Australian international whose contribution told most.
Batting at number three, Cowan arrived after Beau Webster became the first of Iain Wardlaw’s three victims. At 25-1 after 9.4 overs, Scottish tails were up but Cowan drove, cut and hooked his way to a 106-ball century in just shy of 35 overs.
Alex Doolan provided an excellent partner for Cowan, the pair sharing in a stand of 143 and by the time both had departed courtesy of Wardlaw deliveries – Doolan bowled and Cowan picking out Durham star Calum MacLeod without adding to his century, the total was already and imposing 237-3.
Jordan Silk bludgeoned 62 of his own, before a late 19-ball cameo from the unbeaten Mark Hill added 34 more to the score, 303 proving far too many for Scotland to chase.
Tim van der Gugten accounted for both Cross and Macleod, the Nottinghamshire man making ten before being bowled, while Clive Rose’s slow left-arm accounted for four Scots.
After 35.4 overs Tasmania had completed their rout, Scotland all out for 117 and a comprehensive 186-run win for the hosts.
