Yorkshire opener Andrew Hodd’s 166 formed the backbone of Yorkshire’s innings, as the home side frustrated Nottinghamshire’s Second Eleven in the first of their three-day friendly at Harrogate.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Hodd and Elliot Callis reached 87 before Brett Hutton struck twice in three balls. The Nottinghamshire man removed Callis and Dan Hodgson with two catches to Sam Wood at second slip.
Jonathan Tattersall came and went without scoring, nicking Paul Franks to Hutton at slip. From 87-0 to 88-3 Nottinghamshire looked to build up a head of steam, but Hodd’s resistance continued. While Matt Carter bowled Will Rhodes, Yorkshire’s opener saw his side through to lunch, ably supported by Ryan Gibson. By the end of the session Yorkshire were 178-4, Hodd on 79 and Gibson 25.
Yorkshire passed 200 in the 40th over but with the first delivery of the next Franks had Gibson caught & bowled for 37. Franks then took a second in the same over, trapping Matthew Waite again without scoring.
Hodd then reached his century in the 43rd over, and he continued to add runs alongside Josh Shaw. The hosts passed 300 before Shaw, shortly after reaching 50, edged Anuj Dal to Matt Cross. With three wickets remaining Hodd reached 150 but was eventually caught at slip off Adam Tillcock for 166.
In the final session of the day Sam Wood collected the final two wickets, first having James Wainman caught on the square leg boundary by Matt Carter then Jared Warner him him to Dan Freeman at point. Yorkshire were 371 all out, Paul Franks finishing with 3-30 off 12 overs.
Sam Wood and Jake Libby led the Nottinghamshire reply, the pair adding 57 for the first wicket before Libby nicked one behind off Josh Shaw for 29. Will Root joined Wood, and at the close Nottinghamshire had scored 60-1, Wood unbeaten on 30.
