Nottinghamshire were beaten on the final day of their LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.
The home side were bowled out in their second innings for 177, leaving the White Rose county victors by an innings and 152 runs.
Their success meant that Yorkshire collected 23 points and were able to celebrate the capture of the First Division title, moving them too far clear of their nearest rivals, Notts and Warwickshire.
Although disappointed by the outcome, Mick Newell paid tribute to the winners. “Over these four days we’ve been completely outplayed by the best team in the country,” he said. “I think that if they were an international team they wouldn’t disgrace themselves at that level either.”
“The best team always win the County Championship and this year that team has been Yorkshire.”
The director of cricket went on, “I’ve no problem with the defeat, other than that we’ve been outplayed and we need to look at where we can get better. If we finish third or fourth that will be a reflection of our season and maybe it’s a fair reflection.”
Notts had begun the final day on 149 for five, still 180 runs away from making the visitors bat again. James Taylor, unbeaten on 56, and Gary Keedy, on nought, were the not out, overnight batsmen.
Needing five wickets to become county champions, Yorkshire opened the bowling with their two spearheads, Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks.
Sidebottom, the former Nottinghamshire player, was devastating. Having claimed two wickets on the previous evening, he took four more in just over an hour to end with figures of 6-30, taking 4-6 on the final morning.
His first scalp was nightwatchman Gary Keedy (0), who lost his off stump in the third over of the day.
Under cloudy skies, the left-armer revelled in seamer-friendly conditions and then had Chris Read (2) caught behind by Jonny Bairstow.
Luke Fletcher made 5 before edging his former team-mate into the hands of Adam Lyth at second slip.
With a large and passionate following inside the ground Yorkshire knew they were close to their first title in 13 years and the champagne corks were already starting to pop as Adil Rashid removed Jake Ball (0), lbw for the second time in the match.
Taylor (75) had run out of support and tried to drive Sidebottom through the covers but picked out sub fielder Rich Pyrah instead, to begin scenes of joyous celebration.
Notts have one more LV= County Championship match to play, against Sussex at Trent Bridge starting on Monday 15th September at 10.30am.
