Martin Guptill has pointed to New Zealand’s series levelling victory against Australia back in 2011 as evidence that the Black Caps can bounce back in the Second Investec Test Match against England at Headingley.
The 28-year-old returned to the Kiwis’ red ball line-up following a two-year absence in the 124 run defeat at Lord’s.
And with a recent spell in English conditions with Derbyshire under his belt, Guptill seemed to settle back in nicely with a first innings score of 70, only to begin New Zealand’s second innings top-order collapse by nicking-off to James Anderson for a second ball duck.
The series to which Guptill referred in 2011 saw the Kiwis, then captained by Ross Taylor, bounce back from a nine-wicket defeat in Brisbane to emerge victorious by seven runs in a second Test thriller in Hobart.
"We're pretty confident we can come out and square the series, and come away pretty happy,” Guptill said.
“On the last day (at Lord's), we just didn't quite get the batting right.
"We're going to come out this week firing, and hope to rectify that. It was very disappointing. Obviously, we came over here wanting to win the series but you've got to be able to bounce back pretty quickly.
"We showed against Australia, in 2011, winning in Hobart - bouncing back from a heavy defeat in Brisbane. I hope we can do that again this week, we're all raring to go for Friday."
Ben Stokes proved to be a particular thorn in the Black Caps' side during the series opener at the MCC, the New Zealand born Durham all-rounder scoring 92 and 101 before taking 3-38 in the tourists’ second innings.
Guptill admitted it was a special performance from the 23-year-old but insisted that the Kiwis will be better prepared second time around.
"He played a hell of a knock the other day, and really took the game away from us,” Guptill said.
“He was unlucky not to come away with two hundreds. He's turned himself into one of England's better all-rounders, that they've had for a while.
“He's a very aggressive player, likes to come out and play his shots and hits it cleanly. We'll come up with some plans to be able to counter that this week."
Trent Bridge hosts the fourth Royal London One-Day International between England and New Zealand on Wednesday 17 June. Don't miss the chance to watch England's rivalry against the Kiwis continue with explosive white ball action and secure your seat now.
