Nottinghamshire’s Second XI will require just 29 runs to complete a resounding victory over Northamptonshire when they resume on the final day after the visitors’ bowlers backed up the earlier efforts of their batsmen.

Resuming on 223-6, Brett Hutton and Adam Tillcock had added a further 51 runs before the latter edged through to keeper Ben Duckett off Maurice Chambers for 43.

Tom Moores and Hutton shared an eighth wicket 50 partnership to take the score to 327-7 before Aaron West ran out the latter for 76.

Moores marshaled the rest of the tail well, finishing unbeaten on 38 as Notts were finally all out for 351 with a lead of 222 runs as lunch was taken.

Leo Carter and Saif Zaib opened the hosts’ second innings but in the fourth over of the day, Zaib (10) was trapped LBW by Harry Gurney.

Jake Ball (2-23) and Gurney ensured the visitors were on the front foot with their bowling efforts once again, reducing Northants to 53-5 as a two-day result looked possible.

Matthew Plater and Aaron West added a crucial 61 for the sixth wicket, pushing the score past 100 in the process.

However, they couldn’t see out the session as Ben Kitt struck early in his spell to trap Plater LBW for 33.

Khawaja (5*) joined West (31*) and they guided the hosts to 131-6 at tea, still needing 92 runs to make Notts bat again.

West had progressed to 48 before falling with the score on 167, Moores taking a good catch down the leg side off Hutton.

Chambers’ stay at the crease was brief, bowled by Gurney (3-48) for 14, bringing David Burton to the middle with the score on 184-8.

Khawaja and Burton gave the hosts the lead in the 58th over as Khawaja completed his half-century off 86 balls.

The visitors finally got the final two wickets they needed, Will Gidman (2-16) bowling Burton (36) and Will Root striking with his first ball to remove Khawaja (60), the home side all out for 274.

That left Notts needing 53 runs to win but only three overs were possible before close of play, the score ending on 24-0 with Greg Smith and Samit Patel both on 12*.
