Newly appointed Assistant Head Coach Paul Franks has his sights set on helping Nottinghamshire play entertaining cricket, but most importantly to win.

The 37-year-old steps up from his current captaincy & coaching role with the Second XI and Academy and says he’s proud to have been awarded the new role.

“It’s overwhelming and very flattering,” he said.

“I feel very proud to have been given this extra responsibility in helping shape the future of the Club.

“We’ve got players who’ve played a lot of international cricket and those who are making their way in the first-class game.

“We need to have an understanding of their varying skills and qualities.

“The most important thing is to look at how we are going to win cricket matches. That’s how you are judged as a team.

“We’ve got to earn the right first and foremost. If we don’t win the right to win games, we will end up standing still and other teams will go past us.

“Our responsibility is to give the players the resources to keep moving in the right direction, but they have to bring the desire.

“I expect to see a new level of quality in terms of our commitment to each other.

“There is some real quality in amongst it all. It’s about trying to make sure that appears on every given day.

“We have fantastic members and supporters here and to be successful for them would give me massive satisfaction.

“To see this place full is very special. We certainly hope to entertain and keep them coming back.

“The priority, as it always has been, is to help the team win games.”

As a former teammate of the experienced pros and respected mentor to the younger guard, Franks believes his past experience provides the ideal backdrop for the new role.

The importance of stints coaching the United Arab Emirates should equally not be underestimated according to the former all-rounder.

“I’ve got good knowledge of the players; when they have succeeded, when they haven’t and areas they can improve.

“The strong relationships you build within that last a career and hopefully a lifetime, something I believe is crucial to the development of any team.

“There have been lots of frank and forthright conversations along the way, but you always come back to that working relationship.

“I’ve got the respect of the players for what I stand for and what we want to achieve collectively is the most important thing.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the younger players, seeing them through from the Academy to the Second XI and from there into the first team.

“And the work I’ve done with the UAE over the last two and a half years has opened my eyes. I’m no longer institutionalised by two decades in the same environment.

It’s given me actual work experience in coaching away from Trent Bridge and that’s important as well.”

Promotion to the first team staff means Franks will work closely with recently appointed Head Coach Peter Moores, a partnership the stalwart former right arm paceman believes can flourish.

“He is a highly skilled coach who has achieved lots in the game and still has a lot more to achieve,” said Franks.

“You look at his drive and determination to be better every day and that’s only going to help us as a Club.

“I’m thoroughly looking forward to what the future brings. I’ll work as hard as I can every day and what lies ahead will happen.”
