Nottinghamshire legend David Hussey says announcing his retirement made him emotional, and he expressed gratitude for his achievements in the game.

Australia’s BBL with the Melbourne Stars was the final professional tournament in which Hussey, 39, was still plying his trade - up until announcing yesterday that his playing days were at an end.

"I spoke to the boys quietly last night," he said. "It's amazing what you want to do, but you can't actually do it anymore. I'm still pretty emotional about it.

"I'm sort of stopping the progressing of a young player coming through the ranks and achieving their dreams of playing at the highest possible level. It's time to move on, but I’m very thankful for what I've achieved in the game."

Having first signed for the county in 2004, Hussey’s Nottinghamshire career spanned a decade.

A trophy winner with the Trent Bridge outfit in 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2013, the Australian made 223 appearances for the Club - averaging 61, 38 and 36 in the respective three formats of the game.

Capped by Nottinghamshire in 2004, upon leaving the Club in 2013 he became an Honorary Life Member.

In Shield cricket, he represented Victoria with distinction for 12 years and finished by lifting the coveted trophy in 2015.

In white ball cricket, Hussey was 108 times an Australian international – and T20 excellence saw him contracted by three separate franchises in the IPL.

His last act was leading Melbourne Stars to the semi-final of BBL06. It was following defeat to the Perth Scorchers in the last four that Hussey finally said, “I’m done.”

Congratulations to David on a remarkable career from everyone at Trent Bridge.
