Nottinghamshire’s Paul Coughlin took 2-10 from eight overs on the final day of England’s warm-up game with a Jamaica XI at Sabina Park, which precedes the first unofficial Test against West Indies A, starting on Sunday.
With the hosts sniffing victory as they chased 258 in the final innings of the match, the right-arm seamer helped limit their opponents to 131-4 by claiming the wickets of both openers.
Jack Leach took the other two wickets to fall after Saqib Mahmood and Toby Roland-Jones shared the new ball and Jamie Porter was passed fit for Sunday’s match after his impressive first innings performance.
Earlier in the day, England had closed their second innings on 230 as Joe Clarke (87), Dan Lawrence (35) and Ben Foakes (37) spent some useful time in the middle.
However, from 191-5, the Lions’ lower order struggled against Jamaica’s 28-year-old off-spinner Jamie Merchant, who ended with 5-35.
First innings scores had seen England make 263-8, with Mason Crane compiling 129 not out, and Jamaica replying with 236 all out as Aldane Thomas made 109.
Coughlin fell for 3 in each innings with the bat and had figures of 0-31 off nine overs with ball in hand in the Jamaicans’ first knock.
“It was a good three days for us,” said the Lions’ coach Andy Flower. “In almost all cases, the batters have had two innings each, and the bowlers have had at least two decent spells.”
