The re-signing of Ish Sodhi by the Notts Outlaws for this summer’s T20 Blast has been given a big thumbs up from fellow bowler Harry Gurney.

The New Zealander claimed 15 wickets in 2017 competition, which saw the winners’ trophy come to Trent Bridge for the very first time.

Seamer Gurney reckons leg-spinner Sodhi will be even more effective now he has a season in England under his belt.

“Ish is the number one T20 bowler in the world, so any time your club signs someone like that, it can’t be a bad thing.”

“We’re delighted as a squad that Ish has signed again,” the left-armer told trentbridge.co.uk. “He took a decent number of wickets in his campaign considering Trent Bridge was his home ground and was very good to bat on.

“He also hit valuable runs down the order, including on Finals Day when he showed his class, and he’s a great bloke to have around the dressing room.

“I believe he’s the number one T20 bowler in the world, so any time your club signs someone like that, it can’t be a bad thing.

“He brings that crucial variety and wrist spin in T20 cricket is particularly useful . He’s the best proponent of it in the world in this format and it only gives us a better chance of bringing home some more silverware.

“He’ll certainly benefit from his stint here last year. Anytime you go anywhere in the world and are exposed to different conditions, it can take a little time to adjust.

“He had a really good campaign in his debut season and I’m sure he’ll come back this year and be in even better shape to go past his wicket tally from last year and make some match-winning contributions.”

“It’s really important to have continuity. We’ve had it in the past here at Notts with David Hussey coming back year on year.”

Sodhi joins Australian Dan Christian to make up the Outlaws’ overseas player quota – both who were with the Club last summer – and Gurney believes that is a significant advantage.

He said: “In my opinion, it’s really important to have continuity. We’ve had it in the past here at Notts with David Hussey coming back year on year and playing a full season.

“It’s rarer these days than it used to be, but when you can get it, it’s really helpful because those players really buy into the competition, desperately want to do well and become one of the lads for the period they are here.”
