Captain Eoin Morgan insists England will learn more from their heavy defeat to India at Trent Bridge than their emphatic victory when posting a world record against Australia at the venue just over three weeks ago.

The hosts were beaten by eight wickets in front of a sell-out crowd as Kuldeep Yadav recorded best figures by a spinner against England in one-day cricket of 6-25 before Rohit Sharma smashed an unbeaten 137.

Morgan’s disappointment afterwards was palpable, but he believes England will come back strongly.

“We’ve learned more from today (than Australia), definitely,” said Morgan. “The form that we’ve had both home and away in the last six months has been pretty good and it builds confidence playing in different places against different opposition.

“Finding yourself coming up against something like that (Yadav) is rare – like coming up against a very good traditional right-arm leg-spinner – but when you do you need to adapt and think on your feet. It’s always a good challenge.

“We have played great cricket for the last six months, but this is an area to work on between now and the World Cup.

“Given there’s only one left-arm chinaman, it’s not a huge concern, but he happens to be very good, so you have to give credit where credit’s due.

“In the winter we played against Ish Sodhi (currently playing T20 for the Notts Outlaws) on wickets that offered a little bit of turn and I thought we played pretty well, but the left-arm element makes it different.”

“We need to, between now and the next game, clarify and commit to our plans, and just be better.”

Batsman Alex Hales, meanwhile, has been ruled out of the rest of the series with the side strain that put him out of contention for this first match at Trent Bridge.
