Nottinghamshire’s Second XI gained a degree of revenge for a three-day defeat at the hands of the MCC Young Cricketers by winning the first of a T20 double header against the same opposition.

But, playing at Grantham, the hosts could not maintain their momentum and eventually lost a closely-fought second encounter by just six runs – despite an appearance from Outlaws captain Dan Christian.

The first match saw batsman Will Fraine return from a knee injury to score 52 not out and guide Notts to a comfortable victory.

The MCC won the toss and elected to bat first, but Billy Mead (31) was their only batsmen to get into the thirties as they struggled to 124-8 off their 20 overs.

The wickets were shared around as Jordan Cook took 2-10, Luke Wood 2-18 and Jack Blatherwick 2-26.  

Notts lost Chris Gibson (7) early in their reply but Solomon Budinger, with 46 from 46 balls, and Fraine then put on 69 for the second wicket.

When the former fell, Luke Wood (2) and Lyndon James (0) followed quickly, leaving Notts on 95-4.

But there were no further alarms as Fraine made his runs from 41 balls with three fours and two sixes, with Cook, unbeaten on 10, standing firm at the other end to seal a six-wicket win with seven balls to spare.         

In the second match, the MCC again won the toss and opted to bat first, but this time made a slightly better first of things, making their way to 131-8.

The runs were shared around as Marc Lezar (25), Eliot Callis (21) and Kashif Ali (29) all chipped in, while Chris Gibson took 3-18 from his four overs.

Notts hit problems early in their run chase as they fell to 27-4, with Christian (8) one of the victims after hitting two boundaries.

Will Fraine (39), Gibson (25) and Jordan Cook (19) almost rescued the situation before the team were bowled out with two balls to go.

Ben Sears (3-11) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (2-17) were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors.
