Eoin Morgan claimed his side’s fielding was the difference as England slipped to a 14-run defeat against Pakistan.
A dropped catch by Jason Roy and overthrows conceded by Joe Root were amongst the mistakes made by the home side as Pakistan set a target of 349.
“We’ve gone from one of our best performances in the field to something that, while it wasn’t extremely bad, was 15 or 20 minutes of fielding which might have lost us the game,” said Morgan.
“We made mistakes we don’t normally make. It hasn’t happened to us a lot, but we made mistakes today we don’t normally make.
“Fielding is an attitude thing, so it’s maybe a matter of taking our stand-off attitude from today and turning it into a positive attitude.
“Going for everything with a fearless nature and making sure we take half-chances.”
A partisan Pakistan crowd cheered every run and wicket for their side, but Morgan insisted that this did not have a bearing on the game.
“We’ve prepared for this sort of crowd. When you play against Asian teams, it’s always like a home game for them because their crowd is louder than our support, but we prepared for that," he said.
Hundreds from Joe Root and Jos Buttler threatened to give England a fighting chance of overhauling Pakistan’s total, but the rest of the top six mustered just 64 runs between them.
And Morgan said he knew more was needed from the rest of the batting line-up.
“I’m never a big believer that hundreds win you games, it’s always the whole unit that needs to perform," said Morgan.
“The guys [Root and Buttler] played brilliantly and they kept us in the game, but they needed help from the others in the top six.”
