Only 37 overs of cricket were possible on the second day of Nottinghamshire’s Specsavers County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Bad light and drizzle in the second half of the day finally made way for persistent rain, forcing an early closure with the home side on 311 for seven in their first innings.
Adam Hose is unbeaten on a career-best score of 84 but Notts again managed to keep things tight and picked up four wickets in the cricket that was available.
Luke Fletcher took the first of them, giving him figures of 2-43 so far, whilst Steven Mullaney eventually has taken 2-47.
Resuming from their overnight score of 181 for three, the hosts soon lost their marathon man, Dominic Sibley, for 87. The opener had batted for over six hours but pushed at Fletcher in the third over of the morning and Mullaney gobbled up the catch at third slip.
Hose and Liam Banks then added 48 in 14 overs, in pursuit of a second batting point but the loss of a fifth wicket stemmed that charge.
Banks had been reprieved on 23 when umpire Saggers called Stuart Broad for a no ball for excessive short-pitched bowling, when the batsman nicked behind to Tom Moores.
He added four more runs before being given out lbw by umpire Robinson, when attempting a slog-sweep against Matt Carter’s off-spin.
Warwickshire were 237 for five after 110 overs, with both sides taking just one bonus point from the innings. Hose hit Samit Patel straight - and then Carter over leg - for sixes to move to 77 not out at lunch.
Drizzle delayed the start of the afternoon session by around 35 minutes and when play restarted Mullaney gained some reward for his excellent bowling stint on the first day.
After going 23 overs without a wicket the Notts captain picked up two lbw decisions in quick succession; Tim Ambrose shouldered arms for 20 and Henry Brookes followed for and eight-ball duck.
The home side’s captain Jeetan Patel wasted little time in acquainting himself with the conditions, clubbing his second ball from Carter over wide long-on for six.
Bad light forced another stoppage soon after 2.40pm, with Hose still 16 runs short of a maiden hundred.
With half the match already over and Notts still to bat, better weather is hoped for across days three and four.
