Jenny Gunn feels the depth of talent in the women’s game is as good as it has ever been, as England’s programme of One Day Internationals approaches.
The Nottinghamshire all-rounder will be hoping to be part of Mark Robinson’s squad for a six-match series against West Indies, beginning at Grace Road in Leicester on 6th June.
“There’s a massive pool of high quality players available at the minute, and what’s especially good is that players are being picked on form,” said Gunn.
“If you’re performing in county cricket, you will get noticed, which is particularly great for the younger players.
“It also means that if there’s an injury to someone in the first team, they can be replaced without leaving as big a hole behind as they used to. That makes a massive difference in terms of keeping us competitive."
Robinson has helped to foster a relaxed atmosphere amongst the reigning world champions, and has strengthened links between emerging players and the side’s more established stars.
“The academy and the senior squad train together now, which helps with creating consistency in the side,” added Gunn.
“It makes the step up to the senior squad less daunting, and helps the new players know what to expect.
“It’s just another way of making sure there is no need to panic if something happens to one of our players."
England have warmed up for their international summer with a run of friendlies against men’s academy sides, with defeat to the Nottinghamshire Academy being followed by victory over their Durham counterparts.
“We’re looking in good shape,” said Gunn.
“For the Durham game we were able to call on Nat Sciver, Danni Wyatt and Sophie Ecclestone, who were all in India when we played Notts, and Nat smashed 130 against Durham.
“She brings a lot to the side with her batting, bowling and fielding, but it’s an exciting squad in general – anybody is good enough to play in it.”
